The most versatile neutrals for your closet
Neutrals are great building blocks for your closet. They can be worn year-round, remixed with various outfits and get stars for playing well with the brighter, louder colors and patterns in your closet.
Some of our favorite unexpected combinations: Buff (think a light beige) paired with a deep purple; tan paired with coral; and slate paired with a soft pink.
Having a few go-to neutral pieces will make your outfits more versatile and help for those mornings when you can’t figure out what to wear. (We know about that lil’ mound of clothes you build on your floor on those ‘I don’t have anything to wear’ occasions).
Here are some of our favorite neutrals on the market, that will give you a clean and crisp look this spring and will remix easily with your fall wardrobe, too.
Metallic Cove Necklace: Neutral does not have to mean boring. That’s why we love this double strand statement necklace with sparkle n’ sheen accents. It’s color-blocked with slate and tan, and little white pieces that look like mini marshmallows. This necklace would tone down a bright shirt or add interest to a crisp white oxford. Anthropologie. $58.
Tan Chelsea flat: Your tootsies will thank you for the relief of a flat shoe. The modern-day ballet flat has some sheen to it and would look great paired with jeans. We also like the cognac and black. Payless. $16.99.
Francine framed sheath: This classic black sleeveless dress with tan stripes along the side is tremendously versatile. It can be worn now with a blazer or cardigan layered over top, and with a trench coat for rainy spring days. Reviewers are saying they love how flattering the dress is on them. Banana Republic. $140.
Dove topper: Faux leather contrasting with tan on this jacket gives it a modern and sophisticated edge. This jacket is an online exclusive. Ann Taylor is having a sale now that is buy one full-price item, get a second 50 percent off by using the code “CHICBOGO.” Ann Taylor. $228.
Zip back peplum top: The soft ivory peplum top would look great with bracelets stacked on your wrists and with a pair of distressed jeans. Also comes in black, a soft green, salmon and blue. Express. $24.90.
