New appliances that can save you money year after year
The first thing you ask yourself when you do the laundry is probably not “how can I save the world while doing this load?”. But what if you could do some good for the environment and save some money at the same time? You can do this by purchasing energy efficient appliances that will provide a continued return on your investment year after year.
But before you begin looking at what Sears, Home Depot, Target and other appliance retailers have to offer, you have to do a bit of research to ensure you’re buying products with features that will save you both money and energy. Not all environmentally friendly offerings will lead to financial savings. Think about the needs of you and your family or house mates, your budget and what you have space for, in addition to how these needs can be met with money-saving appliances.
Starting with dishwashers, look for one with a “light wash” or “energy-saving” cycle, which will use less water, thus saving you money on your water bill. They also wash for a shorter period of time and some even dry dishes with circulation fans instead of heating coils.
Moving elsewhere in the kitchen to the refrigerator/freezer, consider just how big of a unit you need to meet your needs, because smaller sized appliances will use less energy and thus save you money there. Additionally, green fridges offer more precise temperature and defrost controls as well as better insulation. And look beyond the label since efficiency standards vary by refrigerator type.
And heading into the laundry room, size is also important. You may want a bigger machine if you have a big family, so you’re doing fewer loads. But if you’re a small household, a larger machine would be inefficient for your finances and washing needs. You should also look for a washer with adjustable washer levels or auto-load sensing, which will save on your water bill.
Although these are the major ones, there are plenty of other appliances that you should look into their energy efficiency or financial impact as you choose to replace them. And a variety of brands can cater to your changing needs and desire to reduce your energy use, including GE Appliances. After updating your appliances, your dishes and clothes will still be as clean as you’re trying to make the environment, and your wallet will be a bit more loaded.
