How to pick the right swimming suit for your children
By Aimee Heckel
Parents spend plenty of time hunting for and deliberating their own swimming suits. Before you throw your kids in any old hand-me-down, here are some tips to help you pick the right swimwear for your children.
1. Try it on first. All sizes will not fit the same, and if a suit does not fit right, it can ruin all the fun. A too-tight suit can hurt or cause a rash. A too-baggy suit can be too revealing, and also get in the way of swimming.
2. Pick a style that matches your child’s activities. A strapless or two-piece suit can ride up or fall down when your child is playing. A halter top that ties around the neck tends to stay on even better than regular straps. But some kids don’t like the feeling of a halter tied around their necks.
If your child is tall and slender — too tall for a one piece — a “tankini” may be a good option to provide skin coverage, but with a little more torso-length flexibility.
3. Pick material that provides UV protection. Snapper Rock’s swimwear contains an SPF of 50+. Ali Express has a long list of swimwear and kids clothing made out of UV-protectant materials (including a “Frozen” swimming suit, hello!). 4. Don’t forget other protective attire. Look for UV protecting sun hats, sunglasses and life vests, too. For younger kids, sunglasses that strap around the entire head won’t fall off. Consider packing a sun umbrella and a coverup to protect your child’s skin when she’s not in the water, too.
One Step Ahead sells adorable, reversible, machine-washable UV sun hats for just $14.95. Check out the full matching outfit here: hat, matching board shorts and shirt, all made with the safest, high-quality and comfortable fabric.
