Research shows ‘beer bellies’ are a myth
By Brittany Anas
Here’s some scientific news we’ll raise our glasses and say cheers to: Beer bellies are a myth.
Charles Bamforth, a food science and technology professor from the University of California’s Davis campus, told Popular Science that there’s nothing in beer that causes it to lead to a protruding belly.
“The beer belly is a complete myth. The main source of calories in any alcoholic beverage is alcohol. …There’s nothing magical about the alcohol in beer, it’s just alcohol,” says Charles Bamforth in the interview with Popular Science.
Oh, did we mention that Bamforth is the Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Brewing Science?
In celebration of the sudsy scientific breakthrough, we’ve found some of the coolest beer-related gifts and gadgets on the market:
‘Working on my 6-pack’ T-shirt: A tongue-in-cheek tank top with a six-pack logo seems especially fitting now that the beer belly myth is put to rest. (Urban Outfitters, on sale for $19.99 plus 2 percent Cash Back)
Beer soaps: Do you love beer so much you could bathe in it? This six-pack of soap comes in an assortment of lager, ale, stout and porter — but the alcohol is removed during the soap-making process, so don’t go trying to wash your mouth out with it. The beer soaps also contain natural oils and fragrances. They’re crafted by San Francisco-based soap maker Hiromi. (Uncommon Goods, $50)
The beer machine: Brew up a batch of your own craft beer in just one week with this home brewing kit. A custom pressure gauge indicates the brew quality, carbonation level and dispensing pressure. (Brookstone, $99.99 plus 5 percent Cash Back from ShopAtHome.com)
Microwbrew Beer Bucket Gift Basket: Instead of bringing a bottle of wine to the host at an upcoming party, bring a microwbrew gift basket. It comes with a galvanized bucket, three microbrews (Samuel Adams Sam Seasonal, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Leinenkugel’s seasonal) paired with snacks like roasted peanuts and honey mustard popcorn.
