Rihanna’s ‘Styled to Rock’ show to blend music, fashion
By Brittany Anas
Grammy-winning R&B and pop star Rihanna will have her own reality show, handpicking up-and-coming designers to create styles for A-list celebrities, the Style Network announced this week. The “Styled to Rock” show will air in the latter part of 2013 and feature 10 episodes, each one hour long.
Rihana’s cut-throat fashion competition first debuted in Britain on the Sky Living channel and producers are hoping for higher ratings here in America.
No word yet on who the celebrities will be, but, oh, just imagine the possibilities. A deli owner outfitting Lady GaGa in her next meat dress or an electrician designing Katy Perry’s next LED light-up dress? Probably not. But, in all seriousness, music and fashion are so fun together and we’re excited to see the collaborations that come about and push boundaries.
Rihanna is an exciting fashion icon — with her frequently changing hair styles, the feminine twists she gives to men’s wear and her deep V-neck cuts that rebelliously extend down near her naval.
In honor of the forthcoming fashion show, we’ve got toned-down ways you can get Rihanna’s peacock-and-serpent look that she wore to the Wireless Festival this year. The outfit she sported was a winning design from the British version of “Styled to Rock.” We love the ornate floral, high-wasted shorts juxtaposed with black combat boots. The gold serpent slithering down the front of her black leather hat adds an edge.
Caution: Unless you’re a pop star, it might be try out just a couple of these trends at a time.
Peacock-colors:
Try pairing regal peacock colors like jade and purple together. Or look for dresses or blouses with a peacock-inspired print, like this kimono blouse from Anthropologie that features metallic accents.
Snake accessories
Serpent accessories slithered into style this fall, with retailers like Max and Chloe and Urban Outfitters offering snake-inspired jewels that wrap around wrists and ears.
Combat boots
Want to toughen up a sweet outfit? Military-inspired combat boots do the trick. Boots are 30 percent off at Forever 21 from now until Dec. 9, with lots of combat styles. We fancy these faux sued combat boots in beige and these zippered lace-up boots.
Floral tights
Borrow the black floral pattern from Rihanna’s high-wasted sexy shorts and wear it on more conservative tights. Wear them with a dress or winter-appropriate jacquard shorts and give a sexy texture to your outfit. Madewell has black sheer floral tights and Target has some Kirna Zabete tights on clearance for $5.24.
