Nike Golf announced on Monday that Rory McIlroy signed a multi-year agreement with the company and will tote his own arsenal of equipment and accessories.
On the heels of Tuesday’s announcement, Nike Golf also unveiled a new TV ad “No Cup Is Safe” featuring a friendly competition between McIlroy and Woods.
The 60-second commercial will run on limited networks starting on Jan. 16 and showcases what Nike calls the “athletic competitiveness, remarkable talents and playful attitudes of the two best golfers in the world.”
The 23-year-old Northern Irishman, who is known for his length off the tee, is switching to exclusively play and wear Nike Golf products, making his first manufacturer change as a PGA tour professional.
The top-ranked McIlroy will be sporting his new Nike duds and playing with a new driver at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship this week.
Golf fans and aficionados can also expect to see in stores very soon a new line of Rory-inspired clubs, balls, footwear, glove, apparel, headwear and accessories.
The featured piece of McIlroy’s arsenal is a new driver, the Nike VR_S Covert , which Nike describes as the “world’s first high-speed cavity-back driver that conforms to USGA and R&A Rules.”
Rounding out McIlroy’s arsenal are the Nike VR Pro line of clubs which include “limited edition” fairway woods, irons, 54-degree and 60-degree wedges and a Nike Method prototype putter.
Nike says that McIlroy will play the new 20XI golf ball and will wear apparel from the Nike Golf Tour Performance Collection and the new Nike Lunar Control shoes.
McIlroy had a standout year in 2012 with a stellar season that included a number-one ranking, a Ryder Cup victory for Team Europe and countless titles in both the PGA and European PGA Tours.
McIlroy and Woods are the only two active players under the age of 40 with multiple major title wins.
