Secrets to being stylish on a budget
By Brittany Anas
Want to look fashionable enough for a magazine cover but still be financially savvy enough to get Suze Orman’s nod of approval? Here are some rules to live by — inspired by international style icons and European fashionistas.
Invest in key pieces: Determine what you want to splurge on and what pieces you’ll get the most return on investment in by wearing it frequently. Our suggestions: A flattering pair of jeans that you love the way you look in; a quality handbag you’ll carry season-after-season; a structured white blouse perfect for layering. These items should be classics and stand the test of time. Follow the lead of European fashionistas who govern their closets with the motto of “less is more” and invest in nice, versatile pieces.
Shop trends at fast-fashion stores: Rely on fast-fashion stores like Asos, Forever 21 and even Target for trendy pieces that you’ll be infatuated with for a couple of seasons. You’ll wear these pieces often — whether they be this spring’s trumpet skirts or eccentric sunglasses — but don’t overspend on them since they’re trends.
Find classic staples at the thrift store: Some pieces are timeless and you can save major money on them at the Goodwill. Think: Plaid button-up shirts, blazers and pencil skirts. Also, thrift shops can be goldmines for unique statement jewelry.
Good times to shop at thrift stores: January, because lots of people have dropped off donations for last-minute deductions; Spring, because people spring clean; and in late May when college students are shuffling between leases.
Accessorize: Patterned or bright scarves, chandelier earrings or a colorful statement necklace can transform an outfit by adding pops of color and detail. They’ll make you look more pulled together.
Remix: Fashion bloggers and international style icons like Kate Middleton have showed off how they remix their favorite pieces. A simple navy blue dress, for example, can be reinvented in so many ways — by pairing it with a blazer, layering it with patterned tights, or wearing a cardigan over it to make it look like a skirt.
