Spring into those outdoor spaces
If they haven’t already, signs of spring will soon be everywhere. And that means you’ll want to spend some of your quality time outside.
If your front porch, patio or favorite outdoor hangout is looking a little worse for the wear, it’s time to divert your focus from nesting inside to sprucing up those outside spaces. We’ve offered a few tips to help you ensure family and friends have a great place to hang out.
Sweep away winter:
Step one to the plan is to clean the place up. That means all that mud, old leaves and grime you’ve been ignoring for the past few months need to go. Pull out the hose and blast away that caked-on grime, but not until you’ve taken a broom to the worst of the mess (not to mention the cobwebs on the walls). If you’ve lost, loaned out, or otherwise found yourself without a broom look for a sturdy option that’s not too heavy. HDX Household Corn Broom, $7.97 (plus Cash Back) Homedepot.com
Shake things up:
You know that rearranging the furniture now and then offers you a fresh look on your home, right? If that patio set, those metal chairs and even planters have been in the same location for years, try shaking things up a bit. If you have a friend with a good eye, invite him or her over and keep your mind open to all suggestions.
If you were thinking ahead, you took your cushions in and tucked them safely away for the winter. But if you skipped that step in the fall, or your cushions are worn from use, a simple and inexpensive way to spruce up the porch is to pick up a few new ones. Look for sales, and keep in mind that your cushions don’t have to match. Nature is eclectic. Outdoor Multi Stripe Chair Cushion Threshold, $34.99 (plus Cash Back), Target.com
Bring in the light
Believe it or not, a warm sweater will be all you’ll need to sit outside and enjoy the sunset and early evening hours soon. Bring in a bit of light with some pretty candles. Whether they’re lighted or not, it’s another chance to splash some color onto the area. Brazilian Orchid Candles, $4.99 – $19.99 (plus Cash Back), Worldmarket.com
It’s still a bit chilly, so consider ways to warm up that outdoor space. If a chiminea is out of the budget, toss a throw or two on chairs. And an indoor-outdoor rug is always a good way to warm and brighten up the space. Waverly Ikat Lattice Indoor-Outdoor Rug, from $29.99 (plus Cash Back), Target.com
