Stylish gadgets for Fashion Week
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, a time for designers to display their best and latest clothing lines, commences on February 6 in New York City. But in 2013, it seems almost nothing can qualify as cool without a hearty dose of gadgetry.
Fortunately, wearable computing is a growing trend, from smart watches to Google’s prototype Glass eyeglasses. Shopping around can nab you stylish gadgets to go with every outfit you see at Fashion Week, and a number of them might even help you get in shape.
Fitness kick
Most of the wearable computing devices popping up nowadays track your body’s motions and monitor your progress for better exercise habits. Fibit’s line of pedometers, for example, count your steps after you clip one to your shoe, and there’s a wristband in the company’s future that we just saw previewed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Nike+ line of sports watches and bands are also great for losing weight.
Both these sets of devices and lots of others are available from a number of retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy and Target, where you can nab 2 percent off from your purchases, and Walmart, where you can get 1.5 percent back. Sporting goods retailers such as the Sports Authority are also a good bet, and you procure 40 percent cash back, plus as much as 60 percent off during the store’s winter sale.
Computers on your wrist (and head)
We’re seeing more and more wearable devices that communicate with your smartphone and other mobile devices. Some of the most remarkable are smart watches, like those from Sony and the recently crowd-funded Pebble, which can bring lots of information and functionality to your wrist rather than waiting in your pocket. Smart watches and other cool accessories are available from the retailers listed above.
Expect Fashion Week to be the site of a lot of other interesting developments, such as handbags with solar panels to charge your electronics and hats and the like that include integrated headphones. Many of those devices, like the aforementioned Google Glass, aren’t quite ready for prime time with consumers yet. But keep an eye out for when the coolest gadgets will hit stores, and you’ll likely be able to snag a deal from your favorite electronics retailers.
