Taxes and exercise: How to succeed at two things you don’t even want to do
By Janet Simons
Isn’t there something else you should be doing right now? Maybe exercising? Maybe collecting your tax records so you can finish your income tax return before April?
You’re procrastinating aren’t you?
You’re not alone. It’s a common malaise in January. When you think about it, filing income taxes and maintaining an exercise regimen have at least five things in common:
1. We resolve to tackle them in January
2. They’re both essential to our health and welfare.
3. Most people don’t like them.
4. Ignoring either one can be extremely costly.
5. ShopAtHome.com can help you succeed in both endeavors.
Let’s focus on that fourth one for a minute. According “Stop Procrastinating – Right Now!” an article on WebMD, 95% of the population admits to making a habit of procrastination. And it’s an extremely expensive habit to have.
The article, which originally appeared in Good Housekeeping magazine, notes that, in monetary terms, the total annual cost to Americans of waiting till the last minute to file tax returns is $400 million. Why so much? Because, says Melissa Kirsch, the author of the piece, “once we start rushing we make mistakes.”
$400 million is a lot of money, but failing to exercise can be even more costly. There’s no limit to the number of studies offering evidence that as little exercise as walking a mile a day helps stave off obesity, Alzheimer’s Disease, heart disease, bone loss and a host of other medical plagues.
So why don’t we all just do what we know is good for us? You’d have to read the WebMD article for a full explanation, but, in brief, we procrastinate because as long as we haven’t done a project, we haven’t failed at it yet. So procrastination is really about fear of failure.
Now that we’ve got that straight, it’s time to skip to No. 5. How can ShopAtHome.com help you get over your fears, tackle your taxes and dedicate yourself anew to exercise?
