For years, TOMS has made it possible for us to go shoe shopping for a cause: Every pair of shoes purchased means a pair is donated to a child in need. Since 2006, the company has given more than 10 million pairs of shoes to children. They’re a company with a sole (pun intended).
Now, TOMS is expanding its footprint — serving as a conduit between fellow do-good brands and the brand’s loyal shoppers. Just in time for the holiday shopping season, the company unveiled an online hub — TOM’S Marketplace — that brings together a few dozen socially-conscious brands. The thinking behind TOMS new marketplace? “We believe commerce can be about more than just profits. But it takes more than belief to make this a reality. So we’re giving other social entrepreneurs a platform on TOMS.com to help them succeed.”
You’ll find home goods, jewelry, accessories and electronics at the store. You can also shop by browsing causes, brand or region.
Here’s a few of our favorite jewelry pieces in the inaugural marketplace — whether you’re shopping for yourself or somebody on your gift list.
Carpe Diem key pendant, $40. These necklaces are from The Giving Keys, an organization that hires people who are transitioning out of homelessness and trains them to create jewelry from re-purposed keys. Each key pendant is stamped with an inspiring message to elicit hope, strength or courage. The idea is to wear the key until you’ve embraced the message and then pay it forward. Once you do so, visit The Giving Keys website to share your story.
Bonanza Bib necklace, $68. A statement necklace made with paper beads, sequins and accent beads that come together in an embroidered pattern. This necklace comes from the 31 Bits shop. The organization creates opportunities for 100 women in North Uganda who craft recycled paper into colorful jewelry pieces. 31 Bits also provides job training and counseling to the women.
Turquoise Seascape necklace, $100. This handmade macrame pendant is crafted from turquoise gems, silver beads and white pearls. Sold by Harper Belle, every necklace provides vitamins to a child in need for five years.
