Top 5 iPhone apps for home brewing
By Andrew Koziara
Your journey from beginner to master brewer begins with you and your taste buds. You need to have a good grasp of what kind of beers you like, and why. You need to research a bit into your preferred tastes, and figure out whether it’s the hops, the barley or whatever, that appeal to you. A great app to get you started is BrewGene, which is more focused on tasting beer than actually brewing it.
Once you’ve got an idea of what kind of concoction you want to create, you’ll need to get into the nitty-gritty of it, which is easily the hardest part when getting started. There are two really extensive apps to help you. One is iBrewMaster, featuring detailed schedules and recipes. They also make ingredient shopping easier, with inventory, purchasing and supplier functions. There are too many cool features to list, but definitely start your brewing journey here. An iPad alternative is HomeBrew Assistant, likewise with way too many features to even list, but a lot of the same functionality, from yeast attenuation calculators to break downs of your beer costs by the bottle.

Once you fully understand how to actually go about brewing, you’ll need to tweak and adjust your recipes to perfection. BeerSmith will help you whether you’re starting a new recipe, or just modifying an existing one, BeerSmith lets you manage ingredients and make changes to your recipes on the fly and save them to the cloud to access them anywhere. Another great place to look for inspiration and recipe advice is Basic Brewing. The guys at Basic Brewing have made a comprehensive little app, compiling dozens upon dozens of their very entertaining and informative podcasts. The paid app has extra incentives, like bonus episodes or PDF Handbooks from the show.
That covers it for your brewing needs, but I’d like to give a quick mention to Untappd and similar apps, which build a social community around beer styles, including local ones. Once you have a masterpiece brew on your hands, you’ll want to share it, and you’ll want to check out the local competition too!
