Top vacations on Americans’ bucket lists and how to save money on them
A new survey from Capital One says that 58 percent of Americans don’t have “travel bucket lists” of places they want to visit in their lifetimes.
That got us thinking: How can we plan a vacation of a lifetime? What are some of the most exciting adventures the world has to offer? How can we test the strength of our human bodies in this vast playground of mountains and water?
According to the survey of about 1,000 Americans, four of the top five coveted vacation spots are here in the United States. They are: Hawaii, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and New York City. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia was the top international choice. We’ve taken this opportunity to scout out some of the activities we can do in those top travel destinations.
Go surfing in Hawaii: Whether you’re traveling solo or with your family, check out one of Hawaii’s many surf camps. Surf n Sol — for example — is offered in Waikiki and Kauai. Campers get surf and yoga lessons and massages, and they are served meals cooked by a personal chef. If you’re an advanced surfer, check out Jaws, Maui (waves are rumored to reach 120 feet high) and Sandy Beach — it’s on the South Shore of O’ahu and and its nickname is “breakneck beach.”
Go white water rafting through the Grand Canyon: Because what better way to see one of Mother Nature’s finest sculptures up close? You can paddle through waterfalls during the day and camp in the canyon at night. Grand Canyon Whitewater offers guided whitewater expeditions that range from four days to two weeks.
Go hiking through Niagara Falls: As America’s oldest state park, Niagara Falls State Park was designed with an emphasis on lovin’ Mother Nature. There are several footpaths that wind through the park and even a trail that gets you to the Niagara Gorge. You can even bring Fido — so long as he stays on a leash.
Get fit in New York’s Central Park: From catch-and-release fishing to sharpening your mind with a game of chess, there’s a whole lot to do in New York’s Central Park. But, there’s also an “official workout” for Central Park — a circuit that takes advantage of the parks lawns, benches, stairs and hills and includes interval runs, burpees, push-ups and more.
