Travel guide to NYC fashion week
By Aimee Markwardt
It is the defining highlight in the fashion year — the metaphorical Swarovski crystal accent on the bag of 2013.
NYC Fashion Week, er, Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week, kicks off Feb. 9, featuring collections from more than 70 of the world’s top designers.
While you may not be able to score the coveted tickets (unless you are a member of the press or a fashion buyer), you can still get in on some of the action. New York will be brimming with excitement, and it’s a great excuse to hit up the Big Apple, get inspired and go shopping.
There are also numerous expos in the area open to the public. Or next month, check out FashionCareerFairs.com’s fashion career expo.
Here is your travel guide to maneuvering the catwalks and glitter, even if just from a distance.
1. Get there. If you don’t haven’t booked your tickets yet, search the often-marked-down last-minute deals on airline websites, such as Expedia.com. Travelzoo.com currently has flights to New York City on sale, starting at $98 roundtrip. Cheapflights has a handful of deals and coupons through ShopAtHome.com, such as $250 off select flights.
2. Get close. Fashion Week this year is at the Lincoln Center. Check travel websites like Kayak.com for a list of hotels nearby.
3. Scout the area. Familiarize yourself with the shops, dining, transportation, parks and neighborhoods in the Lincoln Center area, the Lincoln Square neighborhood in Manhattan’s Upper West Side. This will help you identify where you want to eat dinner. The center itself does have great dining options, including Italian cuisine of Jonathan Benno.
The Upper West Side boasts rich culture, history, entertainment and other sites to see. Take a short walk to the famous American Museum of Natural History. Central Park is not far away, either.
For more information, check out the Lincoln Center Visitors Guide.
4. Consider attending another fashion event, such as Couture Fashion Week, Feb. 15-17 at The New Yorker on Eighth Avenue. Tickets range from $70 to $5,000. The historic New Yorker is one of NYC’s most famous hotels and sure to be no disappointment. The hotel’s website indicates there are no rooms available to stay there during Couture Fashion Week, but check Hotels.com for other area accommodations.
Looking for luxury? Check out Hotels.com’s deals and coupons, such as 5 percent off five-star hotels, plus 4 percent cash back, if you travel before the end of April.
