Under $100 challenge: Valentine’s date outfit
Whether you’re headed to dinner for Valentine’s Day, going to the movies or staying in for a romantic night together, you’ll want to look (and therefore feel) spectacular.
But picking the perfect V-Day outfit can be tricky. You may feel tempted to choose red or pink, to go with the theme. Or accent with hearts.
While it’s always fun to let holiday flair inspire you, it’s also best to not let it define you. Here’s how to put together a great Valentine’s Day date outfit — with a hint of hearts, but nothing too childish or cheesy. Best of all: The whole look is less than $100.
Red and black sheath dress:
Sheath dresses are in this year, and the more tailored look is both classy and sexy, perfect for a date. We love the red-and-black dress, because it gives you a pop of red, but toned down with black. The small mesh cutouts above the chest provide a subtle peek, without being too flirtatious. And the pattern means you don’t need to accessorize too much in order to make a statement. That translates into less money and less fuss, so maximum comfort. Women’s Sleeveless Sheath Dress, on sale $29.98 (plus Cash Back), Target.com
Black cropped cardigan:
Warm up your sleeveless sheath with a classic black cardigan on top, which you can take off or leave on, depending on the formality of your occasion. A three-quarter sleeve cropped style doesn’t detract from the form of the sheath dress and keeps the attention there. Jessica Howard Three Quarter Sleeve Open Front Cardigan, $24.98 (plus Cash Back), Macys.com
Wanting a little more cover? Pick up a flowy, jersey cardigan. Want more sophistication? Opt for a blazer with a sturdier fabric. Want to look more romantic and feminine? A lace cardigan is a solid choice.
Tights on bottom:
It’s winter, so you’ll need to finish off your outfit with tights on the bottom half. Like with the blazer, select your black-hued tights to express your style this Valentine’s Day. Solid, thick, knit tights will keep you warm, if you’ll be walking outside a lot. For a more alluring version, we love these sheer tights with a retro back seam, at Macys.com.
Whatever style you pick, steer away from tights with busy patterns, though. The pattern on your dress should not compete with your tights. Pretty Polly Pretty Flirty Back Seam Tights, $21 (plus Cash Back), Macys.com
Closed-toes heels or flats:
Finish up the look with closed-toed heels. Open-toe is not for fall, nor is it for tights. A pair of ankle-high booties could also work to dress down the outfit, if they’re not too clunky. (Beware, clunky is in this season, though.)
A classic but alluring pair of black pumps never went wrong, and you can find a pair for awesomely cheap at Sammydress.com. A faux suede finish is great for winter, although beware if it’s rainy or snowy out. The water will eat that finish right off. Not feeling the tall heels? Sammydress also has a great selection of fancy black flats — for under $20. Concise Women’s Flat Shoes with Suede and Chains Design, $13.88 (plus Cash Back), Sammydress.com
