Four ways to organize your car
Improving organization is consistently one of the top 10 New Year’s resolutions. If your home or that giant stack of files seems daunting, start with your car.
Too often, we let our cars get out of control — especially if we commute far, are heading back from a road trip or if you have young kids who think it’s OK to stash their chicken fingers in the cushion crack.
Looking to improve organization in your car? Here are four great places to start:
1. Implement a new rule: No food and no drink (other than water) in the car. This, alone, will take care of a surprising number of problems — not to mention keep your car from stinking like rotten milk.
2. Consult with a professional organizer. It can be helpful to get an outside perspective on how to improve your space, especially if you feel stuck.
3. Consider feng shui principles. Yes, the Chinese system of spatial orientation and energy applies to your car, too. A key suggestion for feng shui-ing your car is to clear all clutter, to keep your own energy uncluttered.
Another idea is to use a car aromatherapy diffuser with essential oils to stimulate different moods. Find an aromatherapy diffuser at Walgreens for $8.40 (on sale). Try the purifying and oxygenating blend of eucalyptus (anti-microbial) and bergamot orange. Tip: Save money shopping at Walgreens by checking Walgreens’ deals and coupons, such as free shipping on orders of $25 or more, plus 5.5 percent cash back.
4. Invest in some good organization tools. Here are some ideas:
The Container Store recommends keeping a small waste can in your car to keep all trash in one area; empty it every time you get gas.
Use bins — and label them. Keep your kids’ toys in plastic boxes that slide under the seat. Use other bins for umbrellas, a First Aid kit and other car essentials — and keep those items in the trunk, because you don’t need easy access to them every day.
The Tuffo Family Car Organizer, $37 on Amazon.com, is a parent’s dream come true. In addition to adjustable, personalized compartments, this portable case is insultated to keep snack fresh. Save money by checking the Amazon deals and coupons online.
