What to wear on a first date
First dates are all about first impressions — unless you count the Google, Facebook and Twitter research you dug up on your date beforehand.
(P.S., even if you were able to glean from the Internet what his favorite band or sports team is, do yourself a favor and don’t show up in said band or sports team’s T-shirt.)
But hey, about 50 percent of people stalk their dates online before they go on them. (Some say stalk, we prefer the word “screen.”)
The most important thing is that you dress appropriately for your date — whether you’re going on a hike or to a coffee shop or to a fancy-schmancy dinner. You’ll want to be comfortable. Leave something to be desired.
(Read: Avoid super low-cut shirts, bodycon dresses and abide to that rule from middle school — when you place your hands straight down at your sides, make sure they don’t extend further than your dress/skirt).
Oh, and that ginormous handbag you love? We adore it, too — but leave it at home because he might mistakenly fear that you’re trying to move in with him.
If you’re going on a coffee date … Go for a relaxed, bohemian-chic look. Play with fun prints, pattern mixing or colored jeans. Opt for ballet flats or boots rather than heels. Give yourself a side braid or loose bun to finish off the laid-back look.
Outfit inspiration: Blush skinny jeans, black-and-white shell and a fun, happy-go-lucky cardigan with bubble print on it from Anthropologie.
If you’re going on a lunch date … Blend professional with chic. Lunch dates are a perfect time to show off your favorite jeans, paired with a nautical striped top or colored blouse and a tailored blazer. Consider wearing your hair down with loose waves.

If you’re going on a dinner date … Wear a dress that you feel great in and, if it’s basic, add a statement necklace. It need not be a fancy dress — opt for perhaps a shift dress or skater dress. Straighten your hair with a straightener and cream.

If you’re going on an active date … Wear distressed jeans and a fitted hooded sweatshirt or long-sleeve striped T-shirt. Or, shop active wear that is on sale at Old Navy.
