What to expect from Kate Middleton’s maternity style
By Brittany Anas
With the royal announcement that Kate Middleton has a baby on board, fashionistas around the world will likely be wondering how the style icon will revolutionize maternity wear. Pregnancy clothes have come a long way over the decades — especially since the 1980’s when Princess Diana was pregnant with William and Harry. Back then, maternity wear was all about bows, peter pan collars and Laura Ashley floral smocks — mirroring kid’s clothes. Now, it’s more about celebrating the feminine figure with Lycra to show off and flatter the baby bump — not hide it.
Here’s some of what to expect while Princess Kate is expecting.
Princess Kate has a go-to monochrome look that’s classically beautiful. We’ve seen her in, well, fittingly lots of royal blue. When she announced her engagement she wore a deep blue Issa wrap dress. The high-end designer began selling off and other retailers promptly made knock-off dresses. This royal blue dress has the same kind of look for $69 at Due Maternity. Perhaps we’ll see Kate in Isabella Oliver maternity dresses, like this tie-knot dress that was featured in Vogue. Here’s a monochrome soft grey sweater dress from A Pea in the Pod that is stylish and would look great with leggings.
Kate and her sister, Pippa, have both been seen remixing their wardrobes, wearing the same thing twice. It’s smart to buy some key, quality and essential maternity pieces and remix them with non-maternity wear — like scarves and necklaces — to get new looks. Also, check out maternity exchanges, consignment shops and swap with friends.
J. Brand jeans:
Kate Middleton showed the world just how much she loved her J. Brand skinny jeans this summer when she wore them back-to-back at the Olympics. She paired them with a white polo and navy blazer and then wore them again with a Breton-striped T-shirt. Good news for the Duchess of Cambridge: J. Brand has maternity jeans.
