When to Book Summer Travel for the Best Deals
Do you know what we love even more than a summer vacation? A SALE on a summer vacation package!
If your mind is focused on sun and surf, we’ve got the inside scoop on when to book summer travel reservations for flights, cruises, hotels, rental cars and vacation hot spots. Grab your calendar and start taking notes.
If You’re traveling for Memorial Day…
You need to plan now! This first getaway weekend of the warm-weather season is always a busy one and might be best to stay semi-local. Think Road trip! This weekend get your rental car lined up and hotel rooms booked. Wait until mid-May to snag last-minute discounts on entrance fees to family-friendly attractions, like zoos and museums.
Hint: As you browse ideas for Memorial Day weekend, keep a close eye on airline and resort prices. Early spring is the time of year they launch fabulous deals for upcoming summer travel. Plan ahead for your end of summer trip.
If You’re traveling in June…
Good for you! This is an off-peak month because it’s sandwiched between Memorial Day and Independence Day. Take advantage of shorter lines and lower airfares. To get the lowest rate possible on your airline tickets, plan to fly early in the morning or the last evening flight of the day on a Tuesday or Sunday.
Hint: Flights generally start to creep up in price five to six weeks before the departure date. So, book early unless you plan to wait for a standby fare.
If You’re traveling for the 4th of July…
Traveling in the United States? Plan to book two months before your departure to save approximately 7 percent on fees. If you’re hoping to snag a lakefront cabin at an exclusive resort, book now. These specialty travel destinations often book out a year in advance, so it might be time to call for reservations for 2018, or get put on their standby list so you can swoop in if there are any last-minute cancellations.
Hint: Prior to your trip, ask your hotel if they offer a shuttle service to cruise ship ports, area attractions, and the airport so you can avoid taxi or public transportation fares.
If You’re Traveling in August…
Start looking at vacation packages for US travel in June and July. Companies want to get in on the last minute family trips and getaways before the hectic back-to-school schedule sets in. Watch for family-focused opportunities and couples getaways to be at their rock bottom prices at the start of August. If you can swing last-minute travel plans, you could save a lot of cash!
Hint: If you’re headed overseas this summer, plan to book your trip 3-5 months in advance to save approximately 30 percent, according to Travel+Leisure magazine.
Other Ways to Save
Join an Email List
Joining an airline’s promotional email list will ensure that you know about deals as soon as they’re offered. You can also get discount codes to apply at checkout.
Last Minute Bookings
If you’re a diligent planner, avert your eyes.
While booking key vacation accessories last minute can be dicey, it’s also a way to score deals. We only recommend this tactic for rental cars and hotels. Use sites like hotels.com and hotwire.com; they both have this last-minute bookings business model.
