White elephant gift ideas that will get lots of ‘steals’

Just like ‘Ugly Christmas’ sweaters and pop musicians’ remakes of Christmas carols, the white elephant gift exchanges falls into that holiday tradition category that we love to hate. The tacky gift exchanges have become commonplace at group holiday parties — the gift-swapping game where you can ironically trade out a pastel painting of a magical unicorn for — say — a cat-themed Snuggie or a talking fish plaque.
And, in case you were ever curious, the term “white elephant” actually refers to an over-the-top, but burdensome gift. Legend has it that the King of Siam gifted rare albino elephants to courtiers who had ticked him off — with hopes that they might be burdened and financially wrecked by the cost of caring for the elephants.
Alas, it’s always fun to bring a gift to the “white elephant gift” exchange that is so darn good or unique or quirky that it becomes one of the coveted gifts. Instead of raiding your basement (nobody really wants to bring home your garage sale leftovers), here’s a few fun white gift ideas that party-goers won’t mind taking home.
(Money-saving tip: We shopped these ideas at Walgreens, where you’ll earn 6 percent Cash Back on your purchases from ShopAtHome.com).
- Ron Paul Chia Pet, $18. It’s bad form to talk politics at social gatherings — unless it’s the “Chia Freedom of Choice” Ron Paul figurine.
- Pink Hot Booties Microwaveable Slippers, $14.99. Don’t worry. The “bootie” bag keeps the slippers from actually touching the microwave. Because mom always taught you not to put your socks in the microwave, right?
- Hot Huez Temporary Hair Chalk, price varies. Just press, slide and color your hair with temporary chalk for Nicki Minaj-like locks.
- Gray Away Root Spray, price varies. Conceals gray hairs instantly. And, you won’t even offend anyone with this gift because the while elephant exchange offers that kind of anonymity.
- Bright Light Pillow, price varies. The pillow lights up and doubles as a night light.
